How does traveler tracking locate every business traveler?
Traveler tracking shows travel managers and risk managers where business travelers are expected to be and, when travelers share it, where their devices report them. mTrip’s traveler tracking combines two sources on one map: itinerary data from the booking, and opt-in GPS from the branded mobile app. It belongs to mTrip’s risk management add-on for TMCs and corporate travel programs, so a traveler’s location sits one click from an alert or a message. mTrip has served the travel industry since 2009 and serves 300+ clients in 35+ countries.
-
Bookings come in
Every trip starts with a location.
mTrip receives each traveler’s flights, hotels and other segments through integrations with GDS platforms, online booking tools and TMC back-office systems. A booking is all it takes to put a first pin on the map, so every trip starts with a location before the traveler does anything.
-
The itinerary places the traveler
Coverage without the app.
mTrip places each traveler with an active itinerary at their expected location. The traveler installs nothing and changes nothing, so coverage reaches every booked traveler, and the pin is marked as PNR-based.
-
GPS adds the device
Opt-in, controlled by the traveler.
Travelers who use the mTrip mobile app can choose to share GPS. Their pin then shows where their device reports them, marked as GPS-based, and the traveler stays in control because sharing is opt-in.
-
You filter and follow up
One screen, from search to message.
Managers filter the map or the list, read each location type and act. In an incident they contact the travelers concerned straight from the list, and for reporting they export the results to Excel.
Traveler tracking inside an app travelers want to open
mTrip’s traveler tracking runs inside the mobile app travelers already use for their trip, so they install it for the itinerary, not for tracking. Risk apps are usually built for risk alone, and a business traveler gets little in return for installing one. The mTrip app gives the traveler the trip itinerary with flight status, destination guides and maps, and city safety scores.
Tracking from the PNR alone is uncertain. Travelers book outside their TMC and change their plans, and the booking does not follow. An app they use for other reasons can add GPS in the background, which gives a more accurate location than the PNR alone.
- The traveler downloads the app for the trip: itinerary, flight status, guides and maps
- When the traveler opts in, location sharing runs in the background
- Duty of care follows from an app the traveler already values

What does a traveler tracking dashboard show?
A traveler tracking dashboard shows travelers on one map or one list that a manager can search and filter. The tracking screen works as a search, not a spreadsheet, so the manager narrows the results instead of scrolling through them.
Filter traveler tracking results
mTrip’s traveler tracking screen has 8 filters: account, date range, location, tracking type (PNR or GPS), airline, flight number, departure airport and arrival airport. Together they take a manager from a whole program down to one flight.
Traveler tracking on a map or list
mTrip shows the same results as a map or as a list. The map groups travelers into clusters by place, and the list adds the booking reference, trip dates, location and last recorded position.
Export traveler tracking results
mTrip exports tracking results to Excel. A travel team shares a filtered view with a colleague or a corporate client, or keeps it for its own review after an incident.
Contact travelers in an incident
When an emergency or incident happens, a manager filters by location, selects the travelers concerned and messages them by push, email or SMS straight from the tracking screen. The follow-up starts where the location is, so the manager does not copy names into another tool.
Several accounts at once
mTrip lets a manager select one or several accounts in a single search. That suits a TMC that serves many corporate clients and wants one view of all of them.
How do itinerary data and GPS tracking differ?
Itinerary data tells a manager where a traveler is expected to be, and GPS tells a manager where the traveler’s device is. Good traveler tracking keeps the two apart, and mTrip marks each pin so you always know which one you are reading.
| Itinerary (PNR) data | GPS from the mobile app | |
|---|---|---|
| Question it answers | Where is the traveler expected to be? | What location does the device report? |
| Needs the mobile app | No | Yes, with location permission |
| How it starts | From the booking, automatically | The traveler turns sharing on, opt-in |
| Main limit | Only as current as the itinerary. A booking does not prove the traveler followed the plan. | Only covers travelers who adopted the app and allowed location. |
| On the map | Marked as PNR-based | Marked as GPS-based |
Which gaps to watch in your own program, and how to close them, is covered in traveler tracking: close the gaps in your business travel program.
Which gaps break most traveler tracking programs?
Three gaps cause most blind spots in traveler tracking: travelers who skip the app, bookings made outside the program, and plans that change. Each one has a practical answer in mTrip.
Travelers who skip the app
Itinerary-based tracking covers travelers who never install the app. A traveler with an active booking appears on the map from day one, so no one drops off because they skipped a download.
Bookings made outside the program
mTrip lets a travel team add bookings made outside the main booking engine by hand. A hotel booked on a consumer site can leave part of a trip invisible, so the team enters it and the independent side trip appears next to the rest of the journey on the map.
Plans that change
A booking is not proof that the trip happened. A traveler may postpone, switch hotels or cancel while the booking stays the same, so a manager confirms the traveler’s situation directly instead of trusting the booking alone.
Who uses traveler tracking?
mTrip traveler tracking serves TMCs, their corporate clients and business travelers. Each role sees a different page, and the traveler on the road keeps control of their own location.
-
TMCs and their risk teams
mTrip gives a TMC one map of all its corporate accounts. Consultants and duty of care teams filter to the account, country or flight that needs attention, then alert or message the travelers concerned.
-
Corporate risk and travel managers
Corporate risk and travel managers see only their own travelers. A TMC can give a client’s risk manager a dedicated login with traveler tracking and the other risk management tools, limited to that client’s travelers.
-
Business travelers
Business travelers decide whether to share GPS. They keep control of their own location, and a traveler who shares none still appears on the map from the booking, with nothing to set up.
Which systems does traveler tracking connect to?
mTrip traveler tracking connects to 3 GDS platforms, 3 online booking tools and 5 TMC back-office systems. Traveler data is handled under GDPR-compliant policies, as the mTrip Trust Center describes.

How is traveler tracking offered?
Traveler tracking is part of mTrip’s risk management add-on, an optional extra-cost module that works with both the Trip Agent and the white-label offers. The same module holds alerts and messages to travelers. There is no public price list, because the scope depends on your program. Traveler tracking is not built for locating someone who has neither an active itinerary nor the app, and it does not replace your booking engine or online booking tool. Questions about traveler tracking
Frequently Asked Questions
How traveler tracking works
What is traveler tracking?
It is the feature that locates business travelers during a trip, from their bookings or, with their consent, from their phones. mTrip combines both on one map.
Does traveler tracking work for travelers who do not use the mobile app?
Yes. mTrip places them on the map from their itinerary data, the PNR, so coverage does not depend on app adoption. The pin is marked as PNR-based, so a manager knows it comes from a booking and not from a device.
Is tracking from the PNR alone accurate enough?
A PNR shows where a traveler is expected to be. Travelers can book outside their TMC and change their plans, so the PNR alone can be wrong. GPS from an app the traveler uses for other reasons shows where the device is, so combining both gives a more accurate picture than the PNR alone.
Is GPS location sharing mandatory?
No. GPS sharing is opt-in and controlled by the traveler, and travelers who share nothing can still appear from their booking.
Can I contact travelers affected by an emergency or incident from the dashboard?
Yes. In the list view, select the travelers concerned and send them a message by push, email or SMS from the tracking screen, so you do not have to look their details up elsewhere.
Why would business travelers install the mTrip app?
Because the app is useful for the trip itself, with the itinerary, flight status, destination guides and city safety scores. Risk apps are usually built for risk alone, so travelers have little reason to install them. In the mTrip app, location sharing is opt-in and runs in the background.
Fit and pricing
Does traveler tracking work with our GDS and back-office systems?
mTrip integrates with the three main GDS platforms, with online booking tools and with TMC back-office systems, all listed above. Confirm the exact data flow for your setup in a demo.
Does mTrip replace our booking engine or online booking tool?
No. mTrip does not book travel. It takes the itinerary data your booking systems already hold.
Why buy traveler tracking instead of building it in-house?
Building it in-house means maintaining the GDS and booking integrations, native apps for iOS and Android, and the tracking screen yourself. mTrip provides these as one platform, so the team spends its time on travelers instead of upkeep. The build versus buy guide walks through the comparison.
Does traveler tracking cost extra?
Yes, it is an optional add-on to risk management. Pricing depends on your program, so request a demo to scope it.
Data and languages
Is traveler data secure and GDPR compliant?
mTrip encrypts data in transit and at rest and handles traveler data under GDPR-compliant policies. It is registered with the UK Information Commissioner’s Office.
Which languages does mTrip support?
mTrip supports 9 languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish and Japanese.
